A Bidomain Model for Neural Tissue
نویسنده
چکیده
Bidomain models have most commonly used to simulate cardiac tissue. They have only infrequently been used to model neural tissue as they are often computationally intensive and other modeling techniques such as the core conductor model are more appropriate for studying phenomena such as propagation in neural systems. A bidomain model of an aplysia abdominal ganglion was created using COMSOL Multiphysics and used to estimate the impedance and magnetic flux density perturbations caused by external application of current to the complex. Using this model it was found that magnetic flux density changes due to changes in membrane conductivity were below the noise threshold of a 17 T system, but that it may be possible to detect changes with additional averaging or longer current injection.

The Electrical Bidomain Model: A Review
Bidomain model is a mathematical representation of the anisotropic electrical properties of cardiac tissue. It is used to simulate cardiac electrical tissue computationally and to study the stimulation of cardiac tissue and defibrillation of the heart. The model is developed using realistic physiological parameter values based on experimental measurement. The first part of this review describes...
متن کاملAnalytic Modeling of Neural Tissue: I. A Spherical Bidomain
Presented here is a model of neural tissue in a conductive medium stimulated by externally injected currents. The tissue is described as a conductively isotropic bidomain, i.e. comprised of intra and extracellular regions that occupy the same space, as well as the membrane that divides them, and the injection currents are described as a pair of source and sink points. The problem is solved in t...
متن کاملThe effect of simplifying assumptions in the bidomain model of cardiac tissue: application to ST segment shifts during partial ischaemia.
In this study various electrical conductivity approximations used in bidomain models of cardiac tissue are considered. Comparisons are based on epicardial surface potential distributions arising from regions of subendocardial ischaemia situated within the cardiac tissue. Approximations studied are a single conductivity bidomain model, an isotropic bidomain model and equal and reciprocal anisotr...
متن کاملThe inverse problem in electroencephalography using the bidomain model of electrical activity
BACKGROUND Acquiring information about the distribution of electrical sources in the brain from electroencephalography (EEG) data remains a significant challenge. An accurate solution would provide an understanding of the inner mechanisms of the electrical activity in the brain and information about damaged tissue. NEW METHOD In this paper, we present a methodology for reconstructing brain el...
متن کاملA Mathematical Model of Mechanotransduction
This article reviews the mechanical bidomain model, a mathematical description how the extracellular matrix and intracellular cytoskeleton are coupled by integrin proteins. The fundamental hypothesis is that differences between intracellular and extracellular displacements drive mechanotransduction. A onedimensional example illustrates the model, which is then extended to two dimensions. In sev...
